A distinction established in September 1943 for the decoration of military personnel who participated in combat operations on the Kuban bridgehead. The shield was awarded to personnel of Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS units and formations that conducted heavy defensive operations in this sector of the Eastern Front from January to October 1943.
The “Kuban” arm shield became one of the last campaign badges of the Third Reich associated with combat operations on the Soviet-German front. The Kuban bridgehead, held by German forces following the retreat from the Caucasus, was of significant strategic importance for covering Crimea and the Black Sea.
The shield was worn on the left sleeve of the tunic, below the shoulder seam. The obverse depicts a geographical map of the Kuban bridgehead with the characteristic coastline contours of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Awards were made by unit order, and the right to wear the badge was confirmed by a special certificate. The total number of recipients amounted to several tens of thousands; however, the number of actually presented examples is considerably lower due to the military circumstances of the final period of the war.
